#072 ✰ The object is the message
SoaO: Marine's lifelong guitar • Rimowa with dents • the HOKA thing • Japanese watches
Hey there 👋 I’m Mathilde. We are Objet. We explore the intersection of consumerism, myth, satisfaction, desire, taste, joy, meaning and pride. Not specifically in that order. To brag at your next dinner, Objet is the french word for 'object' and should be pronounced 'OB-JEH'.
If you’re new here, welcome 👋

Soul of an Objet | Marine Futin
Sublime possessions have soul and meaning. Meet Marine’s guitar, a gretsch electro acoustic, on which she’s been writing songs for the past 20 years.
Marine has a warm, mellow voice (make sure to listen to the last 30 sec of her video below!). She produces, writes and sings jazzy songs, paints pastels, all while raising the most adorable little girl in NYC. Excited to meet her 20 y/o bestie.
Marine’s Objet profile | her ongoing campaign on kickstarter 💫
Hi Marine! So what's the backstory of this object?
This guitar was a gift from my parents for my 20ieth birthday, so it is pretty special. I was just starting to write songs and play live shows. It came with me in every country I performed, even India! It survived all the weather and road misfortunes. I wrote all my songs with it. So yeah, pretty special!
What object’s been your best investment?
My speakers. I like to invest in long term objects. Like I don't mind spending a large amount of money for something that will last 20 years and more. I bought those speakers to perform live shows in NYC, especially private events. I just can't play with a bad sound, it makes me crazy! It really kills the vibe to me.
Is there any other type of things you truly like to dig into?
I am a geek regarding materials. I am very green materials oriented, like natural and non toxic ones, and I can truly spend hours looking for the right thing. Let's say I want to buy a mattress, I will research for hours until I find natural latex and organic wool or cotton for exemple.
What's the next purchase you're currently contemplating?
I don’t really need things right now, and I do not purchase if I don’t truly need it. But I am always looking for experiences, and traveling is one of the things that brings me lots of inspiration and joy.
Would you have any 'tip' to take care of an object and/or material?
Honestly I don’t really take good care of things uh uh but I overspend on protection for things that matters to me! Like for my guitar I bought a really really strong case that you could throw through a room and the guitar would be totally ok. That’s my way of taking care ;)
Thank you!

🗣 towards better recommendations
our online activity is consumer data that companies can harvest for advertising purposes. As such, there’s little joy left to it. But perhaps recommendations can be a conversational return to a less commodified way of existing online—a collaborative culture of sharing things we like that don’t always require others to spend money.

🧳 objects are living creatures
Out of my way, shiny-perfect-untouched [insert name of object]. I wanna see how you look when I’ve used you a thousand times!
That, Rimowa, was quite an ad : “guaranteed for a lifetime of memories” (…) “Every dent, scratch, and sticker tells a story.”
***
🏃🏻♀️HOKA shoes
“The backstory behind the comfiest, ugliest, and maybe the coolest shoe in the activewear market”.
I particularly loved this comparison👇🙀
