Hey there 👋 I’m Mathilde. Every week I explore the intersection of consumerism, myth, satisfaction, desire, joy and pride. Not specifically in that order. To brag at your next dinner, Objet is the french word for 'object' and should be pronounced 'OB-JEH'. You're welcome.
Hello hello!
As you know, every week, I am paying a small tribute to an existing object that I live with, by writing down its story.
#7 Glowing Gecko

Summer 2014. Our friends are getting married in San Miguel de Allende. The first wedding among our friends and our first time in Mexico, that’s a lot of firsts. After a long but unexpectedly fun mass and a sumptuous celebration, our group of friends from around the world had planned to explore a southern region of Mexico called Oaxaca. This area is well known for its tasty food but it’d be fair to admit I mainly remember its colorful art craft: from ceramics to wood sculpture or carpet weaving.
This glowing gecko is the most vivid objects of that trip and triggers a cocktail of memories and emotions, 8 years later still. After a long day exploring the countryside on our bikes we came across a small village famous for its woodcarving and painting, San Antonio Arrazola. Most of us ended up buying a painted animal, as if we implicitly wanted to seal the good time we just had altogether.
Glancing at it today reminds me of my first time -freaking out but finally- eating grasshoppers. Of Zapotec vestiges where time stops and infinity catches you. Of cheap souvenirs and refreshing agua de Jamaica -hibiscus drink. Of climbing up hills to watch sunset on the pueblo. Of that first time naively realizing how much damage guidebooks do to the authenticity of one place. And of food poisonings, less glam of all.
… which leads me to an announcement, folks! 🥁👇
📱 Introducing: Everyone Shares Stories
We all know the power of stories. Stories are the reasons why we listen to one person more than the other, why we choose a brand or a product over another. Stories are what makes objects worth millions or just a trip to the landfill.
Our bet? facilitating the built of your collection of objects that matter to you. By writing and sharing their stories.
How so? Every week, follow the theme 👇: give life to an existing object of yours by etching its story and sharing it anonymously 🎭 with the community. Your inventory will increment naturally, story after story. And so is the satisfaction of what you have already.
This week, follow the lead of my glowing gecko:

Cool [must] reads.
📰 “If you base your sense of self-worth on success—money, power, prestige—you will run from victory to victory, initially to keep feeling good, and then to avoid feeling awful.” Read wise thoughts : How to Want Less.
📰 About objects that worth millions “A strong backstory can inflate the price of a work significantly. Collectors are particularly fond of the “stolen object” narrative. Combine that hype with a market that will buy a piece of a similar card for $500,000 and you have ideal conditions for a new world record.”
Til next week,
Mathilde
